You need to be contracting your abs during an ab exercise so you are isolating those muscles. If your abs are not contracting while doing ab work, then your lower back and sometimes your thighs are getting more of the workout than your abs.

Body builders get huge ab muscles from doing a ton of ab workouts. The reason they seem so much bigger though is the percentage of body fat they carry around…or lack of body fat is probably a better way of saying it.

The average guy can expect to start seeing his ab muscles when he gets to 10% or below body fat and for women in is a bit higher. If you want that body builder chiseled look, you need to do a bunch of ab workouts and get your body fat below 10%. If you are serious about shedding body fat, then look into some interval training. It gets rid of fat pretty quickly. Good luck!
